BEWARE ! ... Many U.S. visitors on our web site who have admired Multi-Dual Ch. Carromers' Charlie Chalk and have e-mailed us about using him at stud by importing frozen semen may be surprised that we have not replied to their query. This is a general alert to explain why we have not answered individually. We were contacted two years ago by MARGIE DOUMA from Portland,Oregon. She wanted to use Charlie and liked the idea of being custodian of his semen in the U.S. We sent 142 straws stocked with the ICSB in Portland on the understanding that Ms Douma paid initially only collection and shipping costs. The stud fees were to be paid as the semen was used and clearance papers for each bitch inseminated were to be sent to me at the same time.
Ms Douma informed me - the AKC has since confirmed that this was A LIE - that semen used in the U.S. must be the property of a U.S. resident. I could not at that time imagine that she was planning to STEAL the semen, she wrote that she naturally only considered herself as the custodian. To date I have received clearance papers and a stud fee for only the first litter of which Rochar's French Connexion was issue. For the second litter I received the stud fee three months after.
For all other inseminations including that of Alison Hilious' litter (and we know that Alison handed over to Ms Douma the stud fee to be sent to us) I have received neither papers nor stud fee. It would appear that Ms Douma has organised herself an interesting way of making money by having potential bitch owners sign a contract which includes their credit card number, which shows that she trusts nobody... as she obviously judges others' behaviour by her own. Nowhere in this contract is my name mentioned as being the owner of the semen until such time as it is paid for.
It also seems astonishing to everyone on this side of the Atlantic Ocean that I should support the cost of losing semen because of the incompetence of those who inseminate a bitch with a progesterone level of 3ng when it is evident to anyone that under 12 to 15ng the ovocytes are not mature and no successful insemination is possible. Naturally when you do not plan to pay for the semen you can inseminate a bitch in metoestrus or even in anoestrus and then feign surprise that you get no litter. I dislike being taken for a fool although trusting Ms Douma proves that I was most unwise at best and probably a fool but I did not realise at that point all the problems from which Ms Douma suffers and I tend to believe that one should 'do unto others as one would be done by'.
Here in Europe Charlie's semen or a live mating costs $1000. The price in the U.S. was fixed at $850 so that Ms Douma could add on, pro rata, the costs of collection and shipping (arround $150 per insemination).
I have received, up to a year ago, several most extraordinary letters from Ms Douma obviously written when under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other such. That she has such a problem I have only been made aware very lately and of course long after passing the agreement, but I do not feel that her personal problems should be allowed to interfere with the contract. The unfortunate fact is that I no longer feel happy about sending frozen semen to the U.S.A. I have had to refuse many requests from South America and Europe for frozen semen because what I have stocked here in France is now only for my personal future use.
This situation penalizes all you American breeders who have requested information on how to use Charlie at stud through frozen semen. I feel particularly bitter that a small time breeder with an unknown kennel of second rate dogs should have proved to me that Labrador people are not all honest, and that there are also CHEATS WHO ARE THIRD-RATE HUMANS.
